Apres Otago, place aux plaines
tout aussi sèches de la région de Canterbury. Avec la chaleur et le peu
d’ombre, on s’arrête même sur le temps de midi, comme au Cambodge.
We left Otago behind us to tackle the arid plains
of Canterbury. The burning heat and little shade reminded us of Cambodia, where
we also used to take long lunch breaks to avoid the peak heat.
En remontant par le centre du
pays, on longe cette fois-ci la face est
des Alpes. Mont Cook, déjà aperçu sur la cote ouest, est encore plus visible de
ce coté. En longeant les eaux turquoise du lac Punakaiki, le point le plus haut
du pays émerge rapidement parmi les sommets enneigés. On s’en approche encore
un peu lors d’une randonnée jusqu’au glacier Hooker.
Going north in the centre of the country we
followed the Alps on the eastern side. From this side the views of Mount Cook were
even clearer and the turquoise colour of Lake Punakaiki formed a beautiful
foreground for the highest peaks of the country. An easy walk took us the close
to the Hooker glacier.
La dernière étape nous emmène le
long d’un autre lac aux eaux turquoise, le lac Tekapo. De fines particules
rocheuses provenant de l’action des
glaciers reflètent la lumière du soleil, donnant à l’eau un aspect laiteux et
cette couleur turquoise. Pour ce dernier jour de vélo, les montagnes sont
recouvertes d’un fin manteau blanc après une nuit très fraiche.
It was hard to believe that the end of the
cycling trip was approaching fast. On our last part we followed another lake to
reach Lake Tekapo. The fine rock particles of the glacier reflect the sunlight
giving it a milky characteristic and this turquoise colour. A recent snow fall
covered the peaks of the mountains and was responsible for some very chilly nights.
Deuxième ville du pays, Christchurch
a été frappée en février 2011 par un terrible séisme faisant des dégâts considérables
dans toute la région. Le centre ville, fermé depuis lors au public, s’apparente
à un vrai champ de ruine ou certains bâtiments, comme la cathédrale, sont
encore a moitié debout. Sur une parcelle déserte, 185 sièges ont été peints en
blanc en mémoire des personnes décédées lors du séisme.
Christchurch, the second largest city in
the country, had been hit by a terrible earthquake in February 2011, leaving
behind serious damage in the city and the entire region. The city centre,
called the red zone, has been closed off to the public as the remaining ruins
are slowly demolished. On a wasteland 185 white chairs have been placed in
memory of the victims.
Mais en attendant la
reconstruction presque totale du centre, quelques projets temporaires
s’organisent pour que la vie reprenne en ville. On trouve par exemple un peu
d’animation dans les rues piétonnes créées autour de containers aménagés en
commerces. Un peu plus loin c’est un pavillon en palettes qui accueille un
marché et une petite scène de concert tandis que de vieux bus servent de bar ambulant.
De quoi rendre un peu d’espoir et d’ambiance après une telle catastrophe !
We were glad to find the people in the city
full of hope and making the best of their dreadful situation. While they are waiting for the reconstruction
of the city centre, some temporary (long term) projects are organized in order
to create basic infrastructures while lifting everybody’s spirit. A shopping
centre built of shipping containers creates a pedestrian zone with flair and a pavilion
made of construction palettes houses a vintage market and concerts. A converted
old bus has become one of the local favourite spots to socialize and enjoy a
drink.
